Torfaen (Welsh: Tor-faen) is a county borough in South Wales. It lies within the traditional county of Monmouthshire. The name 'Torfaen' is corrupted Welsh for 'rock breaker' and was the original name of the Afon Llwyd, the principle river that flows through the area. From 1974 to 1996 it formed a distric in the county of Gwent.
The district borders Newport to the south, Monmouthshire to the east, and Blaenau Gwent and Caerphilly to the west. Its main towns are Cwmbran, Pontypool Abersychan and
Blaenavon. Torfaen, Located on the borders of the Brecon Beacons and within easy reach of Wales' capital city Cardiff, Torfaen is the ideal place to visit for someone wanting to sample a flavour of Wales whether it be visiting friends and family, a weekend break or for a little longer.

Blaenavon was awarded World Heritage Status in November 2000. The area is also home to the award winning BigPitNationalCoalMuseum.
