A relaxing place where you can take the time to savour every day.

Northumberland is the place for watersports. There are many locations which are suitable for sailing, windsurfing and canoeing.

Northumberland is the least densely populated County in England; and has its own National Park, the most remote and unspoilt of all the English National Parks. It has its own flag, its own tartan and its own dialect. It has more castles open to the public than any other county. In Hadrian's Wall, it has the largest world heritage site in the country; and at Kielder, it has the largest man-made lake in Western Europe set in the country's largest man-made forest. It has its own food and drink and even its own distinct birds and wildlife. And it is the only British county with its own musical instrument: The Northumbrian pipes. It even has its own anthem.

Northumberland largest boundaries were from the river Humber in the south, to the Forth in the North, as the kingdom of Northumbria under King Edwin. At present, however, the county extends covers a much smaller area. Until 1974 it included Newcastle-upon-Tyne, the traditional county town of Northumberland, but that is now part of Tyne and Wear. The county town is now Morpeth.

For some purposes, particularly wildlife recording and many sporting organisations, the 1974 boundary changes are not followed, retaining Newcastle-upon-Tyne and North Tyneside within Northumberland. The official county borders on Tyne and Wear, County Durham, Cumbria and the Lieutenancy area of Roxburgh, Ettrick and Lauderdale in Scotland.

It is a county divided into six Districts and in this site the main towns and villages of the County have been grouped into these six areas.
