The Isle of Bute lies in Scotland's Firth of Clyde, close by to the spectacular sea lochs of southern Argyll. Bute is less than two hours from the city of Glasgow. Bute was a popular Victorian seaside destination, when the main town of Rothesay would be bustling with trippers who had come "doon the watter" during the Glasgow Fair and disembarked from the many steamers that sailed the Clyde. The Paddle Steamer Waverley is the only traditional vessel cruising the Firth nowadays. and it still proves a very popular attraction with a busy summer schedule of routes between Bute, Arran and the mainland.
Bute lies in the Firth of Clyde. The only town on the island, Rothesay (grid reference NS087645) is linked by ferry to the mainland. Other villages on the island include:
Ascog
Ardbeg
Kerrycroy
Kilchattan
Bay
Kingarth
Port Bannatyne and Port Bannatyne Marina formerly known as Kamesburgh.
Straad
Rhubodach
Bute is divided in two by the Highland Boundary Fault. North of the fault the island is hilly and largely uncultivated with extensive areas of forestry. To the south of the fault the terrain is smoother and highly cultivated although in the far south is to be found the island's most rugged terrain around Glen Callum. Loch Fad is Bute's largest body of freshwater and runs along the faultline.
The western side of Bute is known for its beaches many of which enjoy fine views over the Sound of Bute towards Arran and Bute's smaller satellite island Inchmarnock. Straad is the only village on the west coast, around St. Ninian's Bay.
Over the centuries the Isle of Bute has attracted many people who savour the peace & quiet and the friendly reception afforded to incomers. Lord Attenborough, the acclaimed film director and actor has a home on the island, but one of Bute's most colourful past residents was the 19th century Shakespearean actor Edmund Kean. Kean came from a humble background, but he became one of the most famous and wealthiest actors of his time. In 1824 he moved into Woodend House on the shores of Loch Fad. He had bought a lease on 20 acres of land and built this beautiful Georgian home in a very secluded spot.
More recently Rothesay was the birthplace of the child star, the late Lena Zavaroni. Lena was launched on to the world stage before the age ot ten, after winning a TV talent contest and went on to sing with such icons as Frank Sinatra.
