Banffshire

Banffshire is a maritime county in northeast Scotland on the Firth of Moray, bounded on the west and northwest by Morayshire, on the east and south by Aberdeenshire, on the southwest by Inverness-shire. It covers an area of 630 square miles.

In the south are the Cairngorm Mountains, whose highest peak is 4084. Rivers of the shire, famed for their trout and salmon fishing, are the Spey, Deveron, Avon, Fiddich, Isla, Buckie, Livet, and Huntly. There are a few forests in the mountainous parts and in the south a few loch. Noted glens in the shire are Avon, Barry, Fiddich, Isla, Livet, and Rinnes.

extending from the Grampian Mountains to the North Sea. The northeastern portion of the county, including the historic county town of Banff, is part of the council area of Aberdeenshire, the remainder of the county lies within the council area of Moray.

The chief towns are Banff, the county seat, Buckie, Keith, and MacDuff. The shire was the scene of fierce fighting between the Scots and Norse invaders in 960 and again in 1010.
